Symbian Myth

January 28, 2007

To my knowledge, mobile phone works exactly the same way computer does.. that is input-process-output basis. And, certainly it needs Operating system to work. So, far i’ve seen mobile based on Java(applets) and (Symbian,Windows Mobile) Operating system. I heard there are handhelds being developed which utilizes Linux Operating Systems too.

To know more about Windows Mobile, you can check this link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Mobile . It says ” Windows Mobile is a compact operating system combined with a suite of basic applications for mobile devices based on the Microsoft Win32 API. Devices which run Windows Mobile include Pocket PCs, Smartphones, and Portable Media Centers. It is designed to be somewhat similar to desktop versions of Windows.”

Symbian operating system is used by third generation high end mobile phones which gives complete control over the usage of cell phones. With this, one can install lots of third party softwares. Normally, the executable file formats for symbian OS is SIS format but there are some programs in EXE formats too which i can run off that OS. It’s certain geeky procedures you’ve to follow.

I used to wonder though the files have SIS format, it wouldn’t always work or run on my cell phone. I used to think why is this happening. So, giving few search on google, i got whole idea what went wrong.

There are different versions of Symbian OSes and programs are entitled to run according to OS version. As in PC, Win 95 programs can run under Windows XP in compatibility mode but WinXP programs can’t run under Win 95 environment, similarly, SIS programs for older version can possibly run on latest version of Symbian OS and vice versa. But, it’s  best bet to use  programs made for particular version.

How to differentiate which phones have what OSes, lets see ;
